Chapter 5 in Stop Eating Your Heart Out addresses the question, “Why does tapping work?”

“Meridian-based energy therapies often involve tapping on acupressure points. Why does tapping work? Dr. Dawson Church, author and researcher, discussed this question at a 2011 Tapping World Summit online event. When mental health professionals first used energy psychology techniques, many believed that the reason they worked is that they opened the body’s energy flow, similar to how and why acupuncture works. This is true, but advanced research tells us there is even more involved. New experiences, thoughts, and emotions change our nervous system and brain very rapidly. Since trauma gets laid down very fast, why, Dr. Church reasoned, can’t it be removed very quickly, too? We now know that the stress genes in our brains can get turned on within a second or two, and then our body produces adrenaline and cortisol. And cortisol can directly affect fat storage and weight gain, which means that stress helps make us fat. Stress sends us into a fight-or-flight response, which was quite appropriate for our ancestors when a tiger was about to pounce. Nowadays, however, we have all kinds of stress, and our instinctual fight-or-flight response is overkill since we are not in physical danger. Tapping on acupressure points, Dr. Church believes, sends a calming signal to our body, giving our body the message that we are safe. As we tap, we release the upsetting feelings, relieve the stress, and feel better.”

  1. I've found tapping very helpful, and this is a wonderful explanation of why it works!

Energy psychology includes tapping on acupressure points to release physical and emotional pain. I am giving away a free ebook that includes an explanation and teaches you how to do it — "Acupressure Techniques for Weight Control"–these techniques are used for not only cravings but also to reduce the intensity of distressing feelings. Go to http://stopeatingyourheartout.com/home/ to sign up for it.

  3. WOW something new to learn today. I've never heard of this.

Energy psychology techniques are based on Oriental medicine's knowledge of the meridian system. It is sometimes called needleless acupuncture because we hold the points or tap on them rather than inserting needles. I have lots of healing tools in my toolbox and this is my most favorite that I use all the time for myself, my family, and my clients. If you want a free ebook that discusses these techniques (and you'll be able to do them for yourself), sign up at http://stopeatingyourheartout.com/home/

Although acupuncturists have used the meridian system for thousands of years, energy psychology is fairly new…and uses touch or tapping rather than the needles on the acupuncture points. You can learn about it in my free download for registering on my site — http://www.stopeatingyourheartout.com/home Although the ebook is about weight control, these techniques are great for reducing physical and emotional pain.
Let me know if you have any questions.
